China has had many stories of “floating” cities witnessed by thousands of citizens in the respective areas in the past few years. These floating cities have also stirred a hot debate on the possibility of a parallel universe or government-produced holograms. Apart from imaginative speculations, some people are also suggesting that the images could be a Fata Morgana. What’s it all about? Let’s dive deeper.

Floating cities

In October 2015, a couple of online blogs and sites started talking about an image of a floating city over Foshan City in China’s Guangdong Province. The image appeared for only a few minutes and was reportedly witnessed by hundreds. A similar experience also occurred in Jiangxi after a few days. Later in March 2016, people witnessed a stunning view of a group of buildings above the sea by the port of Dalian in China’s Liaoning Province. The residents who viewed the “floating” buildings stated that the whole scene looked like a fairy city floating on the sea.

Speculation

Naturally, the unknown has led to a series of speculations and conspiracy theories. One of the major theories is that the floating cities were, in fact, a hologram produced by the authorities under NASA’s Project Blue Beam test. Project Blue Beam is the speculation that NASA is planning to simulate an alien invasion on Earth or may even simulate the resurrection of Christ on Earth through holograms.

The science

Many experts suggest that these images could be a Fata Morgana — an atmospheric mirage. A Fata Morgana occurs when cold dense air near the ground is covered with a layer of warmer air on the top. It’s essentially an inversion of temperature, as it is the exact opposite of what naturally happens in the atmosphere. The science behind the formation of these images is that the inverse layering of air temperatures bends the light rays as they pass from one air mass to another and creates the appearance of objects being higher than they really are.

With regard to the floating cities viewed in Jiangxi and Foshan, Jill Coleman, an atmospheric scientist at Ball State University, Indiana, studied the temperature of the region during the time and revealed that there were temperature inversions that could have created the whole floating city image.

Harvard University theorist Lisa Randall believes that extra dimensions could exist close to our dimension. Based on her theory, we can surmise that different time-spaces exist right where we are, and due to imbalances or rifts in cosmic planes, the dimensions could open up and we’d be able to see scenes from that dimension.

Another peculiarity of the event is that this sighting has been observed more often in China, as compared to other countries. Could there be a gateway or portal above China? According to Buddhism, there are 81 dimensions, and Buddha Shakyamuni often spoke of other dimensions.

A reason people claim that this is not a Fata Morgana event is that the floating cities are extremely detailed and some have even claimed to see people inside the cities.

Is it even real?

Alan Melikdjanian, an independent filmmaker, states that these videos of floating cities are a complete hoax. He mentions that: “All mirages, including Fata Morgana, can only appear very close to the horizon line. No mirage can extend thousands of feet up.” He also questions the credibility of the source as all images of the floating city come from a single poor-quality video. As a result, he believes that the video is fake and fabricated with visual effects.

However, the video was proven not to be fake, and that the footage was shot live and recorded, and not edited or tampered with in any way. With a modern skyline that does not represent any of the cities in our world, and with people walking around in them, there’s not much proof that it is a mirage either. So, what do you think?
