Foods to avoid when eating kelp

Tea

Tea is an indispensable drink for many people today. Drinking tea after consuming kelp soup is not recommended. Eating the two together will cause gastrointestinal discomfort and prevent the absorption of iron.

Licorice

Seaweed is an alkaline-forming food while licorice is an acid-forming food. Combining this and licorice in a meal will have a neutralizing effect on the digestive system. This will produce adverse reactions in the body, such as negating the seaweed’s nutritional benefits and its nourishing effects.

Persimmons

If kelp soup and persimmons are eaten together, this will cause the loss of nutrients, produce sediment, and cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

People who should avoid eating kelp

Patients with hyperthyroidism

Although the health preservation effects of kelp soup are particularly good, patients with hyperthyroidism should not consume this soup, as it will aggravate their condition.

Women during pregnancy

The recommended daily intake of iodine during pregnancy is 220 micrograms, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. Just one teaspoon (3.5 grams) of dried seaweed could contain 59 times the required daily intake. Very high levels of iodine in pregnancy could lead to low levels of thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) in the baby. The baby could also develop a goiter (large thyroid gland), which could interfere with its breathing. So women should not overindulge in eating this food during pregnancy.
