The geological location of the island made it almost impossible to escape, or so many thought. Since the prison was built, there have been over 30 escape attempts. Twenty-three who attempted escape were caught, six were shot, and two drowned. In 1962, three inmates, Frank Morris along with brothers John and Clarence Anglin, are thought to have successfully escaped from this prison.
