The interpretations of dreams are common, mysterious, and imaginary. But, they are also as accurate as can be, missing no sensory perception we can experience in a waking state.

Since way back, people have tried to find ways to interpret their dreams.

Every culture has its interpretations of dreams. Some think dreams are evil spirits seeking to harm them, while others interpret dreams as messages from angels or deities.

The ancient Chinese interpretations of dreams are that dreams reveal something about your health, mental and physical state, or future.

So, what are your dreams trying to tell you? And can you interpret your dreams?

The ancient Chinese interpretations of dreams

Ancient Chinese believed that dreams implied favorable and unfavorable things. Based on ancient beliefs, traditions, and texts, Chinese dream theory fundamentally differs from Western dream interpretations by psychologists and theorists such as Carl Jung.

Different dreams have different meanings, and people can understand whether their dreams are favorable or unfavorable from dream interpretations. The fundamental ancient theories of Chinese dream interpretations were compiled in one single book, The Duke of Zhou’s Dream Interpretations (周公解梦). This book became a reference point for dream interpretations among ancient Chinese people.

Chinese dream interpretations were also closely tied to traditional Chinese medicine. For example, ancient Chinese medical science believed dreams are linked to your health. And an imbalance between the Yin and Yang led to dreams.

The Duke of Zhou’s interpretations of dreams

The Duke of Zhou was a philosopher, educator, strategist, and remarkable statesman. He is among the most influential leaders in Chinese thought and was idolized as a moral leader to the point that later generations called him the ‘First Sage.’ And as mentioned, the book The Duke of Zhou’s Dream Interpretations became the basis of Chinese dream interpretations.

Today, the Duke of Zhou’s book may be regarded as superstition. However, it may have some scientific rationale for modern interpretations of dreams.

Ancient Chinese interpretations of dreams

Most people are baffled by bizarre dreams. What do strange dreams mean? Here are some interpretations based on the mentioned ancient Duke of Zhou text.

Dreaming of nature

Sometimes, you may dream about water, sea, earthquakes, fire, and forests, among other elements of nature.

For instance, if you dreamed of water, the ancient Chinese believed it was a symbol of femininity, affection, or creativity. Clear water was a sign of a good life. The sea also meant a sign of good things to come in your life or business.

On the other hand, rain symbolizes obstacles in your life because heavy rains prevent people from traveling.

Dreaming of animals

The ancient Chinese interpretations of animals in dreams are fascinating. For example, if you dreamed of a pet dog, it showed that you are fragile and helpless. But on the other hand, if it is a guard dog, it symbolizes that you need loyalty, protection, and safety.

Cats in your dreams usually symbolize women. This is because they represent qualities associated with women, such as sweetness and a little cunning. However, it could also mean you should expect unexpected responses in your relationships.

Other animals and insects, such as lions, rats, lice, spiders, or cockroaches, have their interpretations. Some symbolize a promising future; others an unfavorable one.

Dreaming of people

Babies in your dream may symbolize your honesty, purity, and simplicity. But like the pet dog, it could indicate your vulnerability and desire to be protected and loved. Babies in your dreams can also mean you are about to progress in your business.

Pregnancy dreams may not necessarily mean that you are pregnant. Instead, you may have a rich idea or situation around you. So they symbolize that you have to be patient as your plan or project hatches.

Other people’s dreams include dreaming of the dead, which is okay. Death dreams may mean transitioning or leaving old stereotypes, life patterns, and discriminations behind. They symbolize moving on, letting go of past unpleasant events, or welcoming a new life.

Finding meaning in the interpretations of dreams

In ancient Chinese interpretations of dreams, everything in your dream, from pigs to teeth, symbolizes something. The interpretations of dreams may seem insignificant, but they are a big part of our subconscious.

There are many modern theories about dreams from notable figures like Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Erich Fromm. Like ancient dream interpretations, modern ones agree that dreams are part of the subconscious and may be “telling you something” about yourself. Objects and people may act as a substitute and symbolize something in your life.

Knowing what your dreams mean can help you understand what your subconscious needs. It can help you unlock self-realization, and a fuller understanding of your being, your life, and your place in the world.
