The dynasties of Shang and Zhou (1600 BCE – 256 BCE)

Chinese drums were integral to religious and military rites throughout the Shang Dynasty (1600 BCE to 1046 BCE) and the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BCE to 256 BCE). It is when they were used extensively in religious and military rites. 

Bronze was often used, and the drums’ ornate decorations reflected China’s social stratification. To indicate instructions in war and to accompany religious rites, especially sacrifice ceremonies, drumming was employed as a mode of communication.

The Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE)

Yu Boya was a great musician and drummer who lived during this period. He is mentioned in yet another tale about the invention of the Chinese drum. According to legend, Boya’s percussion was so energizing and rhythmic that it triggered earthquakes and other natural calamities. But according to alternative legend, Boya either invented the Chinese drum or got the idea to build one by the roar of thunder.

The Tang Dynasty (618 CE to 907 CE)

During the Tang Dynasty, waist drums were widely used. Tang Dynasty waist drums were not limited to timber construction; ceramics were also often used.

The Song Dynasty (960 C.E. to 1279 C.E.)

Throughout Chinese history, Chinese drums have played an important role in religious rites and celebrations. Drums played an essential role in religious ceremonies, including sacrifices and exorcisms.
